The presence of the Credit Union on the Mona campus is something of an ancestral, or rather a strategic alliance between two ancestral institutions. The Credit Union comes out of an indigenous practice in Jamaica. I am referring of course to the 'partner', and it has served as an excellent instrument of growth for savings for ordinary people, except it's not so ordinary on the Mona campus for everybody, the clientele stretching from the support staff right through to the academics.
The quality and leadership of the Credit Union is something that I personally have been very very proud of. From before I even became Vice Chancellor I knew a number of them. These are dedicated people who are in the tradition of voluntarist work, again another Jamaican phenomenon which we are losing far too quickly.
